Description of Presentation
Conestoga Valley High School CFF English Teachers, Brandon Hershey and Patrick Sasse will present the tools needed to create useful student assessments on Wikispaces and Microsoft Photostory. A step-by-step tutorial of both programs will be displayed; including formative assessment with digital portfolio examples utilizing Wikispaces and multiple assessment uses for Photostory. PSSA Standard 1.3 is the focus of these projects.

Presentation Blog/Notes:
Wikispaces (Presenter’s wikispace: http://bhershey.wikispaces.com/)
~ multiple people can edit and collaborate on a wikispace – wikispaces are Internet sites
~ idea behind a wikispace where students can collaborate and create together
~ presenter has a page for each class he teaches
~ each page has content listed of the course being taught
~ desire to challenge students to be more reflective… for students to develop a portfolio
~ use the wikispace as a final portfolio (students must create their own professional portfolio) – students have to create their own wikispace page for their portfolio – teacher provides guidelines for what students need to include in their portfolio (provide answers to essential questions, information learned, course reflections and evaluations, etc.)
~ Students are listed on a page which links to their own wikispace (portfolio)
~ Students have to update their portfolio at the end of each book being studied
~ Teacher recommends to evaluate the portfolio during the process
~ Students struggle with the process from time to time, but this is what students need to learn how to wrestle through
~ Tier 1 – Students creates the space. Tier 2 – Groups collaborate together to create a space.

How much time did students work on this? Was it part of your lesson plans?
~ Some projects are part of the content of the portfolio which are included in the plans

Check out the roundtable discussions this afternoon for more wikispaces “How to”

Photostory:
~ Installed on all CFF Window’s machines (or download it for free – http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx)
~ Need to have photos already stored in a folder in order to use Photostory
~ Easy to navigate… step by step process
~ Begin a new project… import photos (edit or crop them)… add text to the photo or effect… add motion/transitions… narrate/record photos…add your own music or create music from Photostory… save the project file .wp3 and then finish the video .wmv file (windows media video played in windows media player)
~ Very quick process
